{"id":1580,"date":"2012-02-03T07:20:41","date_gmt":"2012-02-03T07:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.obieta.com\/?p=1580"},"modified":"2012-02-03T07:20:41","modified_gmt":"2012-02-03T07:20:41","slug":"sharepoint-duplicate-people-search-results-or-none-at-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/obieta.com\/?p=1580","title":{"rendered":"SharePoint Duplicate People Search Results (or none at all)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ran into an interesting issue with the People Search functionality of SharePoint today (which is the opposite of a problem I ran into sometime back, and which is also\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharepointblogs.com\/camper\/archive\/2007\/07\/13\/moss-2007-people-search-issues.aspx\">covered here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The problem today: People results are duplicated.<\/p>\n<p>The problem earlier: No people results at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_thumb.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"544\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The root cause of the issue is the same\u2026 People\/Profiles in SharePoint are a special object, and need to be crawled with the SharePoint (as opposed to http) protocol handler. You need to make sure that you have a content source of\u00a0<strong>sps3:\/\/yourservername\/.<\/strong> In Central Administration, open your Shared Services Provider, and click on Search Settings, and then on your Content Sources.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_thumb_2.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"544\" height=\"216\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On my particular server, I have My Sites setup on a separate Web Application from my root Site Collection, so I thought it would be smart to add an additional entry to search my My Sites of\u00a0<strong>sps3:\/\/yourservername:12345<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, SharePoint was already smart enough to crawl my profiles with the existing sps3:\/\/yourservername, so the additional entry for the My Sites host just caused it to crawl (and display) the profiles twice.\u00a0 Deleting the extra entry and running an incremental crawl cleared things right up.\u00a0 (the opposite problem of no people results occurred when I only had http:\/\/yourservername\/ as a Start Address.\u00a0 I needed to add the sps3:\/\/yourservername entry).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_8.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" title=\"image\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/blogfiles\/seanearp\/WindowsLiveWriter\/SharePointDuplicatePeopleSearchResultsor_D12E\/image_thumb_3.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"image\" width=\"544\" height=\"330\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t see anyone else with the duplicate people search results on the Internet, so it is possible I\u2019m the only person that has ever made this mistake, but if not\u2026 I hope this helps \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Credits:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/seanearp\/archive\/2009\/03\/16\/sharepoint-duplicate-people-search-results-or-none-at-all.aspx\">http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/seanearp\/archive\/2009\/03\/16\/sharepoint-duplicate-people-search-results-or-none-at-all.aspx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I actually have encountered this and I may have discussed it in these forums, but I couldn&#8217;t find anything.\u00a0 If I can remember right, this can be caused by two different things.\u00a0 First, check your profiles that have been imported and see if there are duplicates.\u00a0 This is under your SSP -&gt; User Profile and Properties -&gt; View User Profiles.\u00a0 If there is duplicates in here, that means you need to look at your profile import source and see if you have multiple connections feeding you duplicates.<\/p>\n<p>The second thing to check is your content sources.\u00a0 Look through all of your content sources and see if you have multiple start addresses indexing people.\u00a0 Usually, you should have one start address that looks something like sps3:\/\/myserver.\u00a0 Check all of your content sources and see if you have multiple items that look similar to that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ran into an interesting issue with the People Search functionality of SharePoint today (which is the opposite of a problem I ran into sometime back, and which is also\u00a0covered here) The problem today: People results are duplicated.
